Background of the study
This study evaluates the challenges faced in translating Efik language poetry for an international readership. Efik poetry is celebrated for its rich imagery, rhythm, and cultural symbolism, elements that are often difficult to replicate in another language (Abasi, 2023). The translation of poetry requires a delicate balance between literal accuracy and artistic expression, making it particularly challenging for languages with deep cultural roots like Efik. This study examines various translation approaches, including literal translation, dynamic equivalence, and transcreation, to understand how well they preserve the aesthetic and cultural nuances of the original poems. Data are collected from translated anthologies, interviews with poets and translators, and feedback from international readers. The research investigates issues such as loss of metaphorical meaning, altered rhythmic structures, and cultural misinterpretations. By highlighting these challenges, the study aims to propose best practices for translating Efik poetry, ensuring that its beauty and cultural significance are accessible to a global audience (Abasi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Translating Efik poetry for international readers poses significant challenges, including the loss of nuanced imagery, rhythm, and cultural symbolism (Abasi, 2023). The complexity of poetic language means that literal translations often fail to convey the intended emotional and aesthetic effects, while overly adaptive translations risk deviating from the original meaning. These challenges can result in translations that do not resonate with international audiences, thereby limiting the global appreciation of Efik literature. This study seeks to identify these specific challenges and assess how they affect the fidelity and impact of Efik poetry translations.
